The secondary-suite alternative in OBC 9.10.9.16(4) uses continuous smoke-tight Type X gypsum protection and cannot be applied to an unrelated assembly by analogy. That means your following trades inherit that system's spacing, openings and limits.
The mistake we want found before the work begins
A side-by-side unit wall laid out from the marketing plan can miss the structural and fire-separation line by one stud space. That small move changes bearing, penetrations and the inspected assembly through the full building height. Plans, sequencing, and site decisions
Member and fastening decisions that affect the result
Loadbearing studs use Stud, Standard or No. 2 grade lumber under the Part 9 table, while non-loadbearing studs can use the listed lower grades. That means your installed member must match the grade or product shown in the design. Framing lumber is installed at no more than 19 percent moisture content, which means you can verify the material condition before it is enclosed.
Floor-joist end bearing is at least 38 mm unless the permitted ribbon-board support is used, which means your bearing and connection detail must preserve that capacity. Beam ends require at least 89 mm of even, level bearing unless the applicable span-table note says otherwise. That means you can trace the fastening requirement to the actual assembly.
The hold point and the trades waiting after it
Ontario requires notice when Part 9 structural framing and the heating and air-conditioning ductwork and piping are substantially complete. That means your sequence must reach that visible hold point before finishes. The Code prescribes a two-day inspection response after notice, excluding weekends, holidays and closed-office days, which means you can plan the following trade around the stated response.
The local building department identifies and performs the required inspections; the permit holder must request them. That means your mechanical and electrical work may have to be complete before the framing review. Drywall and firestopping trades inherit the unit-boundary framing, supported edges and coordinated penetrations, which means you avoid reopening work the municipality needed to see.
