A private residential stair has a maximum rise of 200 mm and a minimum rectangular run of 255 mm under Table 9.8.4.1. That means your engineer may need to settle the load path before material is ordered.
A public stair uses a maximum rise of 180 mm and a minimum rectangular run of 280 mm under the same table. That means your quote carries the matching member layout, connector schedule and site handling.
Straight flights, curved flights, spiral stairs, winders and mixed tapered-and-rectangular flights have distinct permitted conditions. That means you get the route supported by the drawings instead of a choice made from habit.
A spiral stair meeting OBC 9.8.4.7 can be the only means of egress only where it serves no more than three persons. That means your following trades inherit that system's spacing, openings and limits.
Private, public, service, attic, crawl-space and certain mezzanine stairs use different dimensional provisions, so the stair boundary is fixed before award. New stairs and material structural alterations can require a building permit and inspection, which means your quote can name exclusions and owner-supplied items instead of hiding them.
Total rise, flight count, landings and stair type determine stringer and opening complexity, so measured stair quantities control the takeoff. Straight, curved, winder and spiral layouts have different fabrication and support details, which means you can compare the selected member schedule rather than a generic allowance. Floor-opening headers, trimmers and transfer framing add structural work, so stair coordination is visible before approval.
A stair laid out from subfloor to subfloor changes when finish thickness is added at one end. The first or last riser becomes different, and every person feels the error even if they cannot name it. We set the flight from finished elevations before the stringer layout is committed.
A required stair within a dwelling unit is at least 860 mm wide under OBC 9.8.2.1, subject to the provision's scope. That means your installed member must match the grade or product shown in the design. Clear stair headroom serving a single dwelling unit is at least 1,950 mm, with a separate lower allowance for beams and ducting in secondary suites. That means you can verify the material condition before it is enclosed.
A stair flight cannot exceed 3.7 m in vertical height, which means your bearing and connection detail must preserve that capacity. Adjacent risers can differ by no more than 5 mm and the tallest and shortest risers in a flight by no more than 10 mm. That means you can trace the fastening requirement to the actual assembly.
Ontario identifies structural framing as an inspection stage requested by the permit holder, which means your sequence must reach that visible hold point before finishes. Many municipal framing checklists call out adjustment of stair rise for tile finishes, which means you can plan the following trade around the stated response.
Municipal deck and porch guides commonly require stair tread, rise and headroom details where stairs are included. That means your mechanical and electrical work may have to be complete before the framing review. Finish installers inherit the allowance established for flooring and nosing build-up, which means you avoid reopening work the municipality needed to see.
Ontario sets the building rules while the municipality administers the permit and inspection for the address. That means your approved set must settle a private residential stair before work is covered. Your site decides the delivery, storage and lifting route for that system. So you get a different sequence for a clear subdivision lot, a tight infill lane or an occupied commercial unit.
Stair classification, permit drawings and finished-floor elevations, which means you give the estimator the current design basis. Plan, section, total rise, available run, width, headroom, landings and door swings, which means your takeoff can include the scheduled members and openings. Add the address, permit status and target start window, so you can separate what is ready to price from what still needs a decision.
